Bailout scenarios

How the planner enumerates open-circuit bailout ascents and how to read one against the loop plan.

A bailout scenario is the same dive, abandoned at the end of a level and finished on open circuit with a subset of the gases you carry. It replays the loop descent and bottom exactly, then ascends on that scenario’s gases with the same model, gradient factors and stop grid as the loop plan.

What the planner enumerates

Only Bailout and Diluent + Bailout gases are open-circuit-capable; a pure diluent is never part of a scenario. For the final level ending the planner builds the full set, labelled All bailout gases, each gas alone, and every combination between; earlier level endings get the full set and the single gases only. Four things limit the list.

  • More than five open-circuit-capable gases: combinations are dropped, reported as More than 5 open-circuit-capable gases — combination scenarios omitted (planned: all gases and each individual gas).
  • A scenario whose runtime exceeds 5.0 × the loop runtime is dropped as not survivable, with a warning naming how many went; the ones kept are not called survivable.
  • With no open-circuit-capable gas the picker is replaced by Add an OC bailout or diluent bailout gas to plan bailout scenarios.
  • Bailout planning runs on Bühlmann and Thalmann. VPM-B is planned on Bühlmann ZHL-16C with a warning; hybrid models and the GF solver are refused with Bailout planning supports the Bühlmann and Thalmann algorithms.

If nothing in a subset can be breathed at the bail depth, the scenario stays on the loop, holding every stop, until one of its gases becomes available: Bailout gas not breathable below 30m — this scenario stays on the loop from 55m until 30m. Those carry a hollow ring.

Reading the picker

The picker sits above the profile chart on the Review step; reaching it runs the enumeration. Closed, the control is one line: the Bailout title, the current selection, and the planner’s note naming a scenario dropped for an unsurvivable runtime.

Open it and scenarios are grouped by bail point, each row carrying its label and time to surface. The loop toggles independently; at most one scenario is active, and the selection can never be empty. A selected scenario is drawn over the loop as a dashed line, with the decompression ceiling and gas timeline hidden; toggle the loop off and it becomes the main profile. The schedule table, gas cards and tissue graph follow the selection.

Bailout SAC rates

Bailout volumes come from Bailout SAC (L/min) at decompression stops and Working SAC (L/min) everywhere else, both on the Bailout SAC Rates card. Only the steps after the bail point consume carried gas.

Read the gas figures on the loop plan as a stock check rather than a sum. Each bailout cylinder is charged with the whole dive replayed at bailout rates, one cylinder at a time, so the figures answer “would this cylinder alone get me out” and are not meant to be added together.
